A late goal by Jesus “Tecatito” Corona salvaged a draw for Mexico against Venezuela. But a draw was all they needed to win Group C of the Copa America Centenario and advance to the quarterfinals.

Mexico went with a lineup without normal starters Memo Ochoa, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, and mainstay Rafa Marquez. Marquez especially was missed in the 1st half, as the team were lacking just a little bit of direction and link up play. Evidence of this was the opening goal of the match by Venezuela’s Jose Manuel Velazquez in the 10th minute. Mexico lost possession and Venezuela took advantage of it.

Mexico was out of sorts a bit during the 1st half, but recovered very well in the 2nd half. Chicharito came on in the 68th minute, right as Mexico regained momentum and made an impact early on. But the night was really for Corona, who expertly dribbled through defenders to slot home the match tying goal in the 80th minute.

Both countries advance to the quarterfinals and as of this posting, await to see who they play next. Venezuela, if they win their quarterfinal match, would come back to Houston in the semis to face the winner of USA/Ecuador.
