The Houston Dynamo defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-0 on Saturday night at BBVA Compass Stadium in front of 20,071 fans. TheDynamo jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead thanks to goals from MF Giles Barnes in the 30th minute and MF Andrew Wenger in first-half stoppage time. The win snapped a six-game winless skid for Houston and improved the Dynamo’s record on the season to 2-5-2 on the year (8 points).

FW Erick Torres, making his first start of the season, set up Barnes’ opener with a deft volley with the outside of his right foot that played the captain in for a first-touch shot. The second score came just moments before halftime when Barnes and MF Cristián Maidana linked up and Maidana fed a pass into space behind the Sporting back line. Wenger ran on, took a touch, and blasted a shot from an angle that beat Sporting GK Tim Melia inside the near post.

After halftime, the Dynamo overcame the season-long bugaboo of allowing late goals and successfully killed off the match, preserving a clean sheet for the second time this season.

Prior to the match, the Dynamo honored longtime fan Leo Ponce, who passed away last month, by dedicating the row in which he sat in his memory. Row 1 of Section 133 at BBVA Compass Stadium will now be known as “Leo’s Row,” and the seats in that row will be donated to first-time fans in honor of Ponce’s passion for introducing new fans to the club and the sport.

The match was the first of three in a seven-day span for the Dynamo, as Houston travels to San Jose for a midweek clash on Wednesday night before returning home to host Real Salt Lake next Saturday, May 14 at 7:15 p.m.
