If one can come up with a word for the opening day of Dynamo pre-season, it would be “new”. New (bu familiar) ownership, new players, new faces behind the scenes. But new is not necessarily a bad thing. If anything, there was the normal excitement of the team and coaching staff practicing together on what will eventually become a routine for the upcoming MLS season.

Gabriel Brener, Oscar de la Hoya, along with the rest of the ownership group were present. In front of the assembled media, de la Hoya stated that he “would increase his presence” around the club & that he was excited about the upcoming season.

Admittedly, it was different seeing no Brad Davis around now that he is in Kansas City. But an experienced core of Rico Clark, Tyler Deric, and Giles Barnes should help fill in on the leadership side of the club.

Barnes had a busy season last year. The Jamaican International not only had club duty, but also played in Copa America & a host of friendlies for the country which took a toll late. Barnes looks in great shape and ready for the season. When asked about taking a break, Barnes (through a smile) said:

“My body needed it. After Gold Cup, I was carrying a few things, a bit of knee/patella tendinitis, and I tried to play through it. But I was only giving about 75% of me. But I’m the kind of person, I missed a lot of football growing up through injuries so I never want to come off the pitch. So it was good to kind of let my body shut down a bit. The last few weeks I’ve been in with (Dynamo Sports Performance Director/Fitness Coach) Paul Caffrey really trying to focus on getting the cardio side. But he gave me an offseason program that really made things go my way. I’m really looking forward to it, and obviously with Jamaica this year there’s a tournament coming up (Copa Centenario), but right now my focus is on the Houston Dynamo.”

Will Bruin was very complementary of new acquisitions Christian Maidana and Andrew Wenger, saying that, “We knew the quality they had playing against them, but playing with them gives you a much better idea.”

Fans will get the opportunity to attend practice on Saturday, January 30th. Gates open at 9:30 am and more information can be found by clicking here
